A facile preparation of environmentally-benign and flame-retardant coating on wood by comprising polysilicate and boric acid

For the sake of direct use on previously constructed wooden buildings, a green flame resistant coating comprising sodium polysilicate (SPS) and boric acid was prepared. With weight gain only 10 wt%, treated wood sample (SPS/B-wood) had an improved limiting oxygen index value 40.3% passed V-0 rating in UL-94 test. Additionally, total heat release, smoke production peak carbon monoxide SPS/B-wood were decreased by 24.5%, 36.0% 59.4% respectively, compared with that control sample. The residue increased to 54.0% from 18.4% at 800 °C thermogravimetric analysis. retardant mechanism suggested SPS formed Si–O–B Si–O–Si contained structures, isolating transfer during combustion. Notably, NaOH introduced SPS/B coating, catalyzed lignin form compact high-quality char. To conclude, this low-cost easily-applied has promising future villages where buildings are densely arranged.
